Take the first step to becoming a CASA advocate:

National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of communities working together to help advocate for and support children who have been abused and neglected.

It is estimated an average of 700,000 children are abused or neglected in the U.S. each year. However, this data is likely incomplete, and the actual number of children abused is likely under-reported. According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, around 20,000 children were removed from their home due to abuse and neglect in 2019.

Child Abuse Prevention Month began in the early 1980s. Congress recognized the disturbingly high rate at which children in our country were abused and neglected and they saw the need for more to be done to prevent child abuse. They resolved that the week of June 6-12, 1982 would be designated as the first National Child Abuse Prevention Week. The following year, April was proclaimed the first National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Since then, advocates around the US have conducted child abuse awareness and prevention activities every year.

Help CASA CTA promote prevention and awareness during the month of April.
